Hey guys ,Im having an issue with my 59 Evinrude 5.5 , shifting,it goes into reverse and neutral,fine but don't stay in fwd gear, unless you hold the shifter,I replaced the shift rod,clutch dog looks fine,the cradle looks decent ,gear set is in good condition,the spring for the shift rod is not broken,I'm stumped

Where did you get the shift rod ?----Part # of it?---It is a wonderful design with no chance of it going out of adjustment.----It can only be the forward gear and clutch dog as the issue.

I would say you need to replace clutch dog and forward gear.----Or PRECISELY grind off the correct material to restore surfaces on those parts

What do you mean by precisely grind? Grind what ,I don't see anything that's burred up or galled,the gears and clutch dog actually look like they're in good condition

There is no adjustment feature.-----Your replacement shift rod is faulty or clutch dog / gear are bad.------Good luck with it.

What's the chances of the shifter fork being bent or out of shape?
